The Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation Awards Automotive Technology Scholarships

The Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation (KKF) is pleased to announce the awarding of two vocational scholarships to Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT) students, Brandie Werlinger, and Albert Chhor.  The two $2,500 scholarships were presented at the annual LWIT Scholarship Reception held on May 6.

Dr. Tom Pendergrass,  Albert Chhor, Brandie Werlinger,  Jay Henwood

The KKF Petter Automotive Scholarship is available to selected graduating seniors attending high schools in the greater Lake Washington School District and to existing students at LWIT.

The three qualifying areas of study within the LWIT Transportation Technology program are:

  • Auto Repair Technician – AAS degree or Certificate of Proficiency
  • Auto Collision Repair Technician – AAS degree or Certificate of Proficiency
  • Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technician – AAS degree or Certificate of Proficiency

Bill Petter was a well-known Kirkland businessman and auto dealer, as well as a long-time member the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland.  More importantly, he was a very generous man who gave much back to the community, especially in ways intended to benefit children and young people.  Over the years Bill was involved in many facets of the automotive industry, hence the decision to offer a scholarship that focuses on the rapidly changing field of Transportation Technology.  Bill passed away in 2011, and thanks to the continued generosity of the Petter family, the Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation can offer these scholarships in his name.

Dale Sahr, president of the Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation commented, “These scholarships are intended to help address the growing shortage in our community for skilled technicians in the transportation field.  Through the scholarships, we strive to help young people achieve their life goals”.

The Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation (https://www.kirklandkiwanisfoundation.org/) is an all-volunteer 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization overseen by the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland, which has been serving children and young adults in the Greater Kirkland community for more than 72 years (http://kirkland.portalbuzz.com/)
