Kirkland welcomes its third brewery and tasting room
Maelstrom Brewing Company will open to the public on Thursday July 13th at 3:00 PM with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30. Maelstrom is Kirkland’s newest brewery, and is located in the Totem Lake / PARMAC neighborhood, one block east of the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The brewery features a 10 barrel brewhouse for production of ales and lagers to be sold on-site in the tasting room, for carry out in growlers, and in select bars and restaurants.
The tasting room features eighteen taps for beer produced on-site, including a traditional hand pull for cask conditioned ale. Maelstrom will offer several year-round core beer styles, but will focus on multiple one-off and experimental ales. The cozy space offers indoor seating for 32 and an outdoor seasonal patio with additional seating. Maelstrom Brewing company is family-friendly and will offer select non-alcoholic beverages and packaged snacks. Outside food is welcome and food trucks are planned.
Maelstrom Brewing Company is the culmination of years of dreaming and planning by Kirkland residents Katherine and Scott Vanderheiden. Scott, the head brewer, started brewing two decades ago as a mechanical engineering student at the University of Washington. After a constantly expanding hobby outgrew the available space in the garage, he polished his brewing skills with formal brewing education. Katherine oversees financial and brewing operations, manages the tasting room, and yet finds time to put on her pink boots to brew a batch. Scott and Katherine are parents to 9 year-old twin girls.
