Kirkland named in Top 10 Best U.S. Cities for STEM workers for 2018

Kirkland has been named in the Top 10 Best Cities to live for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workers. The editors of Livability.com looked at more than 2,000 cities across the U.S. according to share of total jobs falling into the STEM category, median income for jobs in the STEM category and median income for STEM jobs in relation to the overall median income for the city.

According to the Livability.com, Kirkland has “approximately 9,600 STEM-related jobs, accounting for 27.7 percent of the total workforce”, which is the sixth-highest percentage in the country. Kirkland’s “median income of STEM jobs is $122,309”, which is the eighth-highest in the nation. This, and the location of technology giant Google in the heart of Kirkland, all factored into Kirkland’s ranking in the Top 10 Best Cities for STEM workers.

“We are thrilled that the City of Kirkland has been recognized as one of the top ten Cities to live for STEM workers,” said City of Kirkland Mayor, Amy Walen. “Our goal is to attract, retain and grow a diverse and stable economic base and employment opportunities. This ranking highlights Kirkland’s strong economy and position as a major player in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics sector, amongst others”.

In addition to being named one of the top 10 best cities for STEM workers, Kirkland also earned 40th position in the 2018 Top 100 Best Places to Live.
